What is WebP?

WebP is an image format from Google that supports both lossy and lossless compression, plus transparency and animation in many cases. For typical photos and UI graphics, WebP often produces files noticeably smaller than PNG or JPEG at a similar perceived quality, which speeds up page loads and saves bandwidth.

Modern browsers have supported WebP for years; older environments may still need a fallback image, but for most current sites and apps WebP is a safe default for raster assets. Converting existing PNG or JPG assets to WebP is one of the easiest wins in Core Web Vitals–style performance work.

Google and the broader web performance community recommend serving modern formats like WebP (or AVIF where appropriate) alongside sensible dimensions and caching. Here you can convert locally, tune quality, and compare output size before deploying—without uploading originals to a third-party server.
