What is HEIC and why does the iPhone use it?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple’s default photo format on recent iPhones. It is based on HEVC compression, so you get smaller files than classic JPEG at similar visual quality, which saves iCloud and on-device storage. The tradeoff is that many Windows PCs, older Android devices, and some web upload forms still expect JPG or PNG.

Compatibility and sharing

When you AirDrop to a Mac or stay inside the Apple ecosystem, HEIC is seamless. The moment you need to attach a photo to a generic web form, embed it in a PDF, or open it in software that only lists JPEG, conversion becomes necessary. Exporting to JPG sidesteps “unsupported format” errors without asking you to change how you shoot on the phone.

Quality when converting to JPG

JPEG is lossy, so the encoder quality setting matters. A high value (for example 92%) preserves fine detail in faces, foliage, and gradients while still producing a file every platform can read. You can adjust quality here, compare before and after in the modal, and keep every step on your machine—no upload to a third-party server.
