How JPEG compression works
JPEG (JPG) uses lossy compression: it discards some fine detail that human vision notices less, which dramatically shrinks file size compared to lossless formats. That trade-off makes JPEG the default for photos, social posts, and anywhere storage or bandwidth matters.
Our quality slider controls how aggressively that compression runs. Higher values keep more detail and larger files; lower values save more space but can show blockiness or color banding. For general photography shared on the web, many images look excellent between roughly 75% and 85% quality—your eyes and the subject matter should guide the final choice.
Because everything runs in your browser, you can preview results, tweak quality, and even pair compression with resizing for the best balance. JPEG does not support transparency; use PNG or WebP if you need see-through backgrounds.
